Creating a New Top and Sides for Your Tree

In the example shown in the illustration, we see a tree which is uncut. The green lines represent the desired shape of the tree.

The small red lines represent recommended cuts. In the second picture, you can see the new top of the tree where your first cut is made. Your secondary and tertiary cuts should maintain proper technique. Be wary of making hasty cuts, it could do irreparable damage to your investment.

A few tips for cutting at home:
    1. Safety first
    2. Have a plan
    3. Know where your cut pieces are falling

    More About Tree Pruning

Trees are an investment during their first 3-5 years, so pruning for structure is critical. After a tree's third year, pruning helps to develop proper structure, control its size, direct growth and maintain its health. Training young trees via proper pruning techniques has a number of benefits:
    • Improving the strength and structure
    • Increasing the tree's longevity
    • Reducing maintenance costs
When pruning, remove dead, damaged and the weakest crossing limbs, along with sprouts on the trunk near its base.
