AAA Arbor First offers an economical program that could save your trees, depending on the amount of damage already done. We've treated trees with this program by cutting pitch canker off the ends of the branches and applying SuperThrive and Fish Emulsion using the following application procedure:
- Deep water the tree for four hours the day before applying the SuperThrive.
- Following the directions on the bottle, mix SuperThrive with water and using a watering can apply the mixture around the tree root ball.
- Thirty days after application of SuperThrive, deep water the tree for four hours the day before applying Fish Emulsion.
- Using directions on the bottle, mix Fish Emulsion with water and using a watering can apply the mixture around the tree root ball.
- Repeat the above process twice a year.
Two of the most common problems encountered with trees on the Central Coast are Ganoderma root rot and oak root fungus.
Ganoderma root rot – oak trees
Ganoderma root rot is a damaging fungal infection that may take hold of your oak trees, leading to a decline in their health and possible tree loss. There is no recommended chemical treatment for this disease, provide optimal care for your tree as a means of prevention.
Practicing consistent maintenance will result in vigorous trees capable of resisting or fighting off invading fungal pathogens. Grow your oak trees in full sun to partial shade for best results.
Ganoderma root rot affects all species of oak trees and results in the presence of fungal growths on the base of the trunk near the soil line. If treatment is neglected, trees may suffer from severe internal decay and die within 3-5 years.
Oak root fungus
Oak root fungus (or armillaria) infects the soil in many parts of the world, but for various reasons, it is more of a problem in California than elsewhere in the West. The fungus organism sustains itself on buried wood and mostly dead roots, but it also gets into the tissues of living plants ... and often kills them.
Some plants resist this fungus infection. Gardeners in armillaria-infested neighborhoods on the Central Coast can play it safe by planting a variety of known resistant trees.
